Lending a sympathetic ear and dispensing sage words of advice is all part of the job for psychologist Pilar Alvarez, and she’s everything a good therapist should be warm, compassionate, supportive. She listens, she cares, and she has all the answers, but how’s the woman everyone turns to in their hour of need supposed to cope when her own life starts to fall apart? While working hard to make a success of her recently-opened practice in trendy South Beach, Pilar must also find time to cater to the demands of her boisterous Cuban family, which includes younger sister Izzy, an unemployed, navel-pierced wild child who can't stay out of trouble, and their mother, a beauty queen turned drama queen who’s equally obsessed with her fading looks and getting Pilar married before it’s “too late.” Although she’d like to oblige her mother and make a permanent love connection, Pilar’s romantic prospects look grim. Her cheating ex, who swears that he’s reformed, is stalking her. A hunky, but strictly off-limits, patient with bad-boy appeal and intimacy issues is making passes. And the sexy shrink in the suite across the hall has a gold band on his left ring finger. When a series of personal and professional disasters lead Pilar into the arms of one of her unsuitable suitors, she's left shaken, confused, and full of self-doubt. With time running out, she must make sense of her feelings and learn to trust herself again so that she can save her business, her family, and most importantly, her heart.

This was such a cute story! I immediately fell in love with the Alvarez family. The story revolves around Pilar, a pschologist, and her quest to keep her practice afloat while also handling her difficult sister, Izzy, her parents, and finding love. I loved getting to know some of her patients and her psychiatrist friend, Dr. Ford. This story has some suspense, love and twists. No spoilers, but I love a happy ending! I hope there are many more stories about the Alvarez family to come from Tracie Banister.Product details

In Need of Therapy Tracie Banister 9781480035843 Books Reviews
Dr. Pilar Alvarez seems to have it all She’s intelligent, compassionate and beautiful, and she has just opened her own psychology practice in sunny South Beach. The problem is that her neurotic patients, self-absorbed ex boyfriend, and crazy Cuban-American family members (who have just as many neuroses as her patients) are taking advantage of her good nature and driving her to the brink of personal and professional ruin. In a moment of weakness, Pilar ends up in the arms of a dashing doctor of psychiatry who has recently moved into her office building. But the sexy shrink has a past—one that sends Pilar into a spiral of self-doubt. She has to learn to trust herself again or she will lose everything.
Like Pilar, In Need of Therapy has it all. For one thing, Miami and South Beach make for a flashy and splashy setting. And Pilar’s Cuban heritage adds even more color to the story. Her family members are perfectly portrayed the patient papá, the beauty-queen-turned-drama-queen mamá, and the pierced party-girl sister, just to name a few. And I love the way that Tracie Banister works in little details specific to Pilar’s ethnicity; for example, when Pilar is trying keep from smiling even though she "felt happy enough to burst open like a piñata filled with too much candy.”
Pilar’s swimsuit designer friend Sara, her patients, and her ex also add a lot of fun and flair to the plot, not to mention the two surprising twists near the end. Speaking of the end, one of my absolute favorite parts of this book was the epilogue, in which Banister follows up on what’s been going on with Pilar, her family, and her patients months later (you know, the same plot device you see in hilarious movies like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and more recently “The Hangover.”) And on the subject of movies, In Need of Therapy would make a terrific romantic comedy. Simply put I am in awe, Tracie Banister.
Sequel, please!
In Need of Therapy, Tracie Banister's second novel, has been on my TBR list since I finished Blame it on the Fame. I've been so busy reading other books by my new amazing Indie author friends, that I kept putting it off. I wish I hadn't! This story was so much fun to read. I was drawn into Pilar's world and her problems. She is your typical "middle-child" adult the mediator, the one who gets taken advantage of, the one who just wants peace and love. That's the last thing she gets, though. I could relate to her need to keep the peace, to cover up for her sister - even though having her sister live with her disrupted Pilar's life to the point of frustration.
The angst between Pilar and her ex-boyfriend was really fun to read and I know I kept rolling my eyes like "Is he ever gonna get it?!?!" And the antics from Pilar's mother had me in stitches, so dramatic and lovable. And when one of the nephews caught the couch on fire?? Oh my gosh, tears streaming down my cheeks from laughing! I feel like if I say much more, I'm going to give away the book and I don't want to do that.
Ms. Banister's characters are well-drawn out, the extra bits of setting make the story come alive and the way all of her characters relate to each other - well it makes you wonder if she has a huge whiteboard hanging on the wall with arrows pointing this way and that. This book really does have it all and that's one of the things I love about Ms. Banister's work. There's something for everyone in the stories - that and there are stories within the stories. I love the depth of each novel. You'd be crazy not to buy it and add to your Tracie Banister collection!
Ms. Banister creates an emotional and flavorful explosion in this zesty, feisty, fun novel!
I love the imagery in this book. Set in South Beach, Florida, we meet Pilar Alvarez, a tender hearted Latina who is therapist, friend, and daughter. This all comes together beautifully as we watch Pilar trying to help everyone around her, forgetting to help herself. Her story unfolds against the backdrop of bold colors, hot sandy beaches, and cool Spanish architecture.
Wanting to break out of the expected role, Pilar puts her heart and soul into her passion, being a therapist to some very quirky clients. Young and without a lot of life experience, Pilar learns what it means to spend her days helping others, and her free time helping her ex-boyfriend understand that boundary lines have been drawn.
Is Pilar the quintessential enabler? Neck deep in rescuing her sister, Izzy, one can't tell if she does it because of her culture or because she just wants to rescue everyone in sight. Her best friend Sara, a fashion designer with a major chocolate addiction, endeavors to help her friend find balance in her own life.
When we meet the hero, it turns out that he is worthy of the title. Pilar's world becomes much more complicated because he is everything she shouldn't want and can't have.
Read this highly entertaining novel by Tracie Banister. A definite must read.
