Excerpt from The Quiet Crisis

The coincidence of these two events raised questions in my mind Is a society a success if it creates conditions that impair its finest minds and make a wasteland of its finest landscapes? What does material abundance avail if we create an environment in which man's highest and most specifically human attributes cannot be fulfilled?

Each generation has its own rendezvous with the land, for despite our fee titles and claims of ownership, we are all brief tenants on this planet. By choice, or by default, we will carve out a land legacy for our heirs. We can mis use the land and diminish the usefulness of resources, or we can create a world in which physical affluence and affluence of the spirit go hand in hand.

The Quiet Crisis Classic Reprint Stewart L Udall 9781331438694 Books

The Quiet Crisis by Stewart Udall remains after 50 years, a masterpiece. Every serious student of U.S. history must read this thoughtful analysis of the attitudes of Americans towards both the earth and the creatures that inhabit North America.
There are a number of historical studies of the conservation and preservation movements in America: some are very detailed and excellent. But this study focuses on attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs (a.k.a., paradigms) that drive public policy. Every member of Congress should be required to read this study before they are allowed to take their oath of office and approve one new law or spending bill.
The later section written in the 1980's, "...and the next generation" is more harsh of specific political policies (and specific politicians) during the 1960-to-1990 period. Perhaps a reflection of the disappointment by the author of politicians that utterly failed to grasp the absolute necessity to change our collective attitude toward our world.
If anyone has an interest in nature or wildlife, this study is an absolute must read.

Udall was way ahead of his time. This is a classic.
Great book. Prompt delivery. It was even signed by Stewart Udall ! Many, many thanks.
Excellent book about the long term development of climate change especially in light of US history and policy
Stewart Udall's writings about the environmental issues hit the nail on the head as others have reviewed. But this paperback leave something to be desired as some of the pages have photos that are not clear or hard to view plus the binding cuts off some of the reading. I also ordered the hard back to give as a gift that should be a better buy. The writings gets 5 stars the reprint version gets 4.
A well-written book looking at the the history of Conservation in the United States. Conservation is neither Red, Blue, Whig, Bull Moose or Mugwump. Conservation occurs under all kinds of Presidents & Congress. Some of this has to be researched in depth independently in order to come to the conclusion that no one tribe is the sole owner of righteousness and that we are all in this together. Helps one speak intelligently on the subject.
